On July 18, the global community comes together for Women’s Dive Day to celebrate the female explorers who are breaking barriers and deepening our connection to the ocean. Whether you are a newly certified open-water diver or a seasoned technical explorer, this day is about more than just a date on the calendar; it’s about shared expertise, empowerment, and the right tools to make every dive unforgettable.
Meet Abi, one of our fabulous salespeople and an avid diver. Abi has been diving for 12 years and has her rescue certification. Abi enjoys diving with family and friends, and her favorite dive is the Spiegel Grove in Key Largo. She is passionate about volunteering and does so at the Clearwater Aquarium and also participates in beach clean-ups. Her “must-have” dive accessory is a headband, which is great for those with long hair … in addition to keeping her hair out of her field of vision, nothing ruins a beautiful dive faster than a mask leak caused by stray hairs or a painful scalp sunburn during a long surface interval.
Dive Buddy Originals Swimbands are available online and in-store to help all of our long-haired mermaids and mer-men have a more comfortable dive! These aren't your average headbands. They are specifically designed for the marine environment: by providing UV protection for your scalp and a marine-grade bungee lock so the headband is custom-fitted to any head shape and stays on. There are several colors and styles to choose from.
Next up is Katie, who not only works for Divers Direct but is also a Coral Restoration Foundation (CRF) intern. You will see her out diving with her fellow CRF workers! Katie has also been diving for 12 years and particularly loves diving with sharks. Her favorite dive destination is Jupiter, Florida. Katie would not dive without her Shearwater Perdix 2 dive computer.
Shearwater has recently launched an upgraded version of the Perdix 2: the Shearwater Perdix 3 and Swift Transmitter Combo. This is the gold standard for serious divers with its ultra-bright 2.4” AMOLED display for crystal-clear visibility underwater; a Swift GPS transmitter; and advanced connectivity to ensure your transmitter signal performs optimally. Both the Perdix 2 Ti and the latest Perdix 3 are great investments that will grow with your skill level, from your first reef dive to your first shipwreck penetration.
Lindsay has been diving for 8 years and holds a stress & rescue certification. She enjoys diving with her friends and her newly certified son! You’ll likely see her in her favorite dive spots in West Palm, Boynton or Looe Key. Lindsay also actively supports environmental causes like Keep Tampa Bay Beautiful, the Florida Aquarium and beach clean ups.
Lindsay enjoys helping our customers get properly fitted for their dive gear. Many of our female customers like the Zeagle Zena BCD (Women's) for its fit and comfort. This BCD was engineered by women, for women, and features a twin waist and hip band system that allows the BCD to be positioned below the waist which is closer to a woman’s natural center of buoyancy. The Zeagle also has added room in the bust and a smaller cut to eliminate the bulky feeling of some other traditional fitting BCDs, and it is travel ready due to it lightweight feel.
Our last featured female is Kimberlee who has been diving for three years. Kimberlee’s favorite dive so far has been the Christ the Abyss statue in Key Largo. When she is not diving with her son or working, you will likely find her volunteering with iCare, Surfrider, FWC, the Coast Guard Auxiliary or REEF.
Kimberlee loves diving with her Mares X-Stream fins which provide strong propulsion with minimal effort, and she always takes her mesh collecting bag that she uses to store her found treasures!
When is PADI Women’s Dive Day?
Women’s Dive Day is celebrated annually on the third Saturday of July. This year, the big day falls on July 18! It’s a global event designed to encourage more women to get certified and stay active in the diving community.
What is the best scuba BCD for women?
While "best" can be subjective, the Zeagle Zena is widely considered one of the top choices because it is designed specifically for the female anatomy. Its twin-band system and bust-friendly cut solve the common comfort and buoyancy issues found in unisex models.
How do I keep my hair out of my mask while diving?
The best way to prevent hair from breaking your mask seal is to use a dedicated dive headband, like the Dive Buddy Originals Swimbands. Unlike regular hair ties, these provide a wide surface area to hold back flyaways and use a marine-grade bungee to stay secure during the dive.
Why is air integration important for safety?
Air integration (AI) links your tank pressure to your dive computer. Computers like the Shearwater Perdix 3 use this data to calculate "Gas Time Remaining," telling you exactly how many minutes you have left at your current depth based on your breathing. This removes the guesswork and helps prevent low-air or out-of-air emergencies.
