Imagine you’re enjoying a quiet afternoon at a family barbecue, or perhaps you’re relaxing on the boat during a surface interval between dives. The sun is out, the vibes are good, and then, in an instant, the atmosphere changes. Someone collapses, or a child starts choking on a snack. In those first few seconds, what’s valuable isn’t a fancy dive computer or carbon-fiber fins, it’s the knowledge stored in your head and the confidence in your hands. At Divers Direct, we believe it's important to be a steward of safety for your community, both above and below the waves.
We often talk about "perishable skills" in the diving world. If you haven’t practiced your buoyancy control in a year, you might feel a bit wobbly on your next wreck dive. However, emergency response skills like CPR and First Aid are the ultimate perishable skills. When adrenaline kicks in during a real-life crisis, your brain relies heavily on muscle memory. If it’s been five years since you last practiced chest compressions on a manikin, that hesitation can feel like an eternity.
Taking a refresher course is important because it helps maintain that "rescue mindset." This mindset allows you to stay calm, assess a scene for safety, and move through the proper steps. Whether you are a seasoned Master Diver or someone who has never even donned a snorkel, understanding the basic mechanics of how to support life until professional medical help arrives is a profound gift you can give to those around you.
Our instructors are experts in teaching life-saving techniques to everyone. Whether you’re a scuba diver or not, we welcome individuals who have a need or desire for CPR/First Aid certification.
Learning these skills in a dive shop environment offers a unique advantage. Unlike the often sterile or clinical feeling of a hospital-based training session, our classes are held in a relaxed, community-focused setting. We focus on hands-on practice and real-world scenarios. Our goal is to make you feel empowered, not intimidated.
If you’re looking to gain these skills, the program we offer is known as the SSI React Right course. This is a modular, flexible training program that covers how to respond to emergencies. Because it is modular, we can tailor the experience to your specific needs, though we highly recommend the full suite of training for the most comprehensive preparation.
The core of the program focuses on the Primary Assessment, which is identifying life-threatening emergencies. From there, we move into CPR and First Aid skills. You’ll learn the correct depth and rhythm for chest compressions and how to provide effective rescue breaths. We also cover "Primary Stabilization" technique, which shows how to keep a patient steady and safe while waiting for EMS.

For those looking to go the extra mile, the SSI React Right course also includes optional components for Oxygen Administration and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) use. In the diving world, oxygen provider certification is a gold standard because of its importance in treating decompression illness. On land, knowing how to operate an AED can increase a cardiac arrest victim's survival rate significantly. It’s all about building a toolkit that serves you in every environment.
Let’s be honest: even in Florida, the weather doesn't always cooperate. Maybe a cold front has moved in or the visibility at the springs is less than ideal. These "dry days" are the perfect opportunity to head into the shop and knock out a certification that doesn't require a drop of water.
By choosing to do your CPR and First Aid training during the off-season or on a rainy weekend, you’re maximizing your time. Instead of sitting at home wishing you were diving, you’re becoming a more capable, confident member of the diving community. Plus, it’s a great way to catch up with our staff and fellow divers, share some stories, and maybe even find a new dive buddy.
Safety is the foundation of every great dive, and that foundation starts on land. Whether you are looking to refresh your skills after a few years, are a first-timer wanting to be prepared, or are seeking a professional certification for your career, we are here to help.
Our instructors at Divers Direct are passionate about sharing these life-saving techniques in a way that is easy to understand and even easier to remember. If you’re stuck on shore because the water is cold or the weather is rough, why not turn that "dry day" into a day of growth? Sign up for an SSI React Right course at either our Fort Lauderdale or Orlando locations. We’ll provide the manikins, the bandages, and the expertise; you just bring your willingness to learn. Let’s work together to make our community a safer place for everyone.
Why do scuba divers need CPR training?
Scuba diving involves physical effort in an environment where medical help isn't immediately available. Divers need to be prepared to handle rare but serious incidents like near-drownings or cardiac events on a boat. Furthermore, a valid CPR/First Aid certification is a mandatory prerequisite for the Stress & Rescue (SSI) certifications.
Do I need to be a certified diver to take a CPR course at a dive shop?
Not at all! Our CPR and First Aid courses are open to everyone. Whether you’re a parent, a student, a grandparent, a teacher, or someone who needs a certification for work, you are more than welcome to train with our professional instructors.
How long is a CPR certification valid for divers?
Most major agencies, including SSI and PADI, require you to refresh your CPR and First Aid training every two years to remain "active." This ensures your skills stay sharp and your knowledge is up to date with the latest medical guidelines.
