I have one of these from several years ago and it is holding up well. It is also useful on top of a 3mm full wetsuit for use in colder water (75-78) or on night dives. The front zip is great for that.

The small measurements are: Waist 30-31", Chest 35-36" The medium measurements are: Waist 31-33", Chest 36-38"

Most people who layer up tend to put the shorty on top of a full wetsuit. I have seen people go one size up on outer layers (especially women's sizes), but that could make it harder to use on its own. I have used the same size in the past for both layers and typically that's what I would recommend unless you're 'in between' sizes.

For a 44" waist, it is recommended that you go with the 3XL
