This might sound like a funny name, but the fact is this little inexpensive device can actually save your life. The purpose of the scuba sausage is to make a diver more visible in the water. The most common situation where one might use this device would be if a diver were to get separated for the dive boat and was far enough away that the boat crew could not see them, inflating the it would increase the visibility of the diver greatly. This could be a real lifesaver; especially if the seas are rough or the water temperate is cold and exposure could become an issue.
A Safety Device for Scuba Divers...
This device itself is a long brightly colored tube which when inflated sticks way up in the water. It’s height along with the bright color are both responsible for helping the diver stand out more so that the boat crew can see him. It is usually clipped to the diver’s BCD in a place that is easy to reach for quick deployment when needed. Most dive masters carry one since they are leading and responsible for a group of divers. It is a good idea for all divers to carry one of this bright tubes when scuba diving though just in case you get pulled away from the group or if you come up to far from the dive boat and need to be picked up.
Scuba Sausage are also useful on drift dives especially when divers are coming up in pairs and not as one group. It is common for divers to surface in different areas making it necessary for the dive boat to go from place to place “gathering up” the divers and getting them back on board the dive boat.
A must have for Scuba Divers...
So remember the next time you go diving, make sure you include a scuba sausage…it’s an inexpensive piece of dive gear that just might save your life.
