Scubagirl - would you please clarify if you have a standard SL4 or a LED SL4? Thanks!
While I do NOT have the LED version - I do own the older SL4 with a bulb. And it is a great little light! I use it around the house as well because it is so bright - better then most landlubber lights. I am writing this review because I am wanting to get the LED version and don't understand the previous review about the LED version having a sensitive bulb.... That is the only reason I want an LED version instead of the standard SL4 - I plan on going long term cruising and want a reliable bulb.
PS. The Standard SL4 is very bright and penetrates very well with a spotlight effect. But since it doesn't provide a good floodlight effect - that's the reason it's not a good primary light.
I use the UK SL4 E LED as my secondary light for night dives but it is my primary on every daytime dive. Because of it's compact size, it remains in the pocket of my BC. It is easily accessible if I want to look into a reef overhang or reef cave for bugs. It also comes in handy to look into the nooks and crannies of the hull of a wreck.
The only drawback to this unit is that the light bulb is very sensitive. You must take great care to place it somewhere in your dive bag where it will not get banged around, otherwise, the bulb filaments will go bad.
I known that it sounds crazy...but it's true. I used it 1 time before the bulb went bad on me. After my dive, the unit was placed in my gear bag and then into the back of the car. I guess where I had it in the bag was not secure enough and it may have moved around a little bit. Whatever movement it made, it was enough to mess up the filaments. The replacement bulb was $11.99.
I have used it many, many times since then and have not had to replace the bulb.
Great product...but a little sensitive.
